Observational associations describe patterns in study populations—they do not guarantee the same result for any one person.
Research question
How does daily physical activity, mitochondrial capacity, muscle strength, chair stands, and stair climbing relate to the outcomes measured in this study?
Participants
39 adults: 10 young active, 10 older active, and 19 older sedentary
Follow-up
See primary publication for follow-up duration.
Findings
Active older adults had mitochondrial capacity and exercise efficiency similar to active younger adults. Sedentary older adults were lower on those measures and slower on chair stands and stair climbing. Mitochondrial capacity was related to muscle performance and physical function.
What this means for your lifestyle
Staying active is tied to strength and everyday function that resemble younger adults. The study compared people as they were; it did not assign a training program or track survival.
Limitations
Small groups; cross-sectional; the active groups included few women.
