Observational associations describe patterns in study populations—they do not guarantee the same result for any one person.
Research question
How does endurance cycling, resistance training, and combined endurance plus resistance training relate to the outcomes measured in this study?
Participants
34 young adults (ages 18–30) and 31 older adults (65 and older)
Follow-up
8 weeks of supervised training
Findings
Endurance training and combined training increased muscle mitochondrial oxidative capacity. Strength, fitness, and body composition improved with training. Most adaptations did not depend on age.
What this means for your lifestyle
Aerobic training, including aerobic work plus strength work, raised muscle energy capacity in older adults during this trial. The study measured training changes, not years of life.
Limitations
Small supervised sample of healthy volunteers; eight weeks is a short window.
