Observational associations describe patterns in study populations—they do not guarantee the same result for any one person.
Research question
How does cardiorespiratory fitness (mets from exercise testing or estimation) relate to the outcomes measured in this study?
Participants
102,980 participants (all-cause mortality); 84,323 (CHD/CVD events)
Follow-up
See primary publication for follow-up duration.
Findings
Each 1-MET higher fitness was associated with 13% lower all-cause mortality (RR 0.87, 95% CI 0.84–0.90) and 15% lower CHD/CVD events (RR 0.85, 95% CI 0.82–0.88). Low vs high fitness categories showed substantially higher event rates.
What this means for your lifestyle
Improving aerobic capacity through regular cardio is a meaningful health target; testing and training should be individualized and medically informed when indicated.
Limitations
Observational cohorts; varied CRF measurement methods; publication-era data.
