Observational associations describe patterns in study populations—they do not guarantee the same result for any one person.
Research question
How does habitual physical activity and regular exercise training relate to the outcomes measured in this study?
Participants
Adults across those activity and function groups; group sizes are reported in the primary paper
Follow-up
See primary publication for follow-up duration.
Findings
Aging was associated with lower mitochondrial capacity, exercise capacity and efficiency, gait stability, muscle function, and insulin sensitivity even when daily activity was similar. Exercise-trained older adults largely did not show those gaps. Mitochondrial capacity correlated with exercise efficiency and insulin sensitivity.
What this means for your lifestyle
Regular training is tied to strength, gait, and muscle energy capacity closer to that of younger adults. This study did not measure lifespan.
Limitations
Cross-sectional. Group differences do not prove that starting exercise will produce the same change for every person.
