Observational associations describe patterns in study populations—they do not guarantee the same result for any one person.
Research question
How does self-reported weightlifting and moderate-to-vigorous aerobic activity relate to the outcomes measured in this study?
Participants
99,713 adults (median age 71) with follow-up questionnaire data
Follow-up
See primary publication for follow-up duration.
Findings
Weightlifting 1–2 times/week was associated with 9% lower all-cause mortality after adjusting for aerobic activity; combined aerobic plus weightlifting showed lower mortality than aerobic activity alone in joint models.
What this means for your lifestyle
Combine cardio with muscle-strengthening work for overall health—consistent with major physical activity guidelines.
Limitations
Self-report; observational; older adult cohort; residual confounding.
